Trouble connecting?

NFC (near-field communication) is a technology that allows smartphones to exchange small amounts of data with other devices when they are close together. NFC is the technology that enables contactless "tap to pay" between your smartphone and a payments terminal. In Coachtopia, NFC chips using this technology are embedded in your product and transmit data (a link to your product's digital passport) to your smartphone when the smartphone is held close against it. Your usage of the NFC chip and the Coachtopia product's digital passport is subject to the Coachtopia Passport and NFC Terms of Use, which can be found here.

Each NFC chip in a Coachtopia product is linked to a unique digital passport that holds details of the product's materials, impacts and Made Circular™ design details. This digital passport is updated each time a product lifecycle event, such as a repair, trade-in, or recycling, occurs. This allows every owner to learn more about their individual Coachtopia product and its impact. It also means that when a Coachtopia product comes back to us, we have better information about where it is on its circular journey, to help us best prepare it for its next life.

The NFC chip is embedded in your product behind the connected cloud emblem. For bags it can be found in the leather hangtag. In small leather goods and bag charms, it's on the back of the product. In ready- to-wear, it's in a label on the product, which can be found either on the back or front of the product or, for repurposed denim jeans and skirts, it's in its waistband. For shoes, it's in the sole. To access the digital passport, find the connected cloud emblem and hold your smartphone closely against it until the pop-up appears.

No. A few Coachtopia products do not contain an NFC chip—recycled resin bag charms and chains, hair clips, leather stickers and jewelry. For bags, small leather goods, apparel, and footwear, you can access the information on the digital passport by scanning the NFC chip (see question "Where can I find the NFC chip in my Coachtopia product?") or the QR code sewn into the inside of your product (except footwear may not contain a QR code).

Apple: iPhone XR, XS or higher come with a background NFC Tag Reader and require no action other than simply holding your phone against the NFC chip. iPhone 8, 9 and X require you to turn on the NFC Tag Reader manually in order to scan an NFC tag; to do this, check under settings > Control Center > scroll down to More Controls > tap the (+) icon next to NFC Tag Reader. Your phone should be updated to iOS 13.0 or later. Android: Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ or higher; Google Pixel 2 or higher. Some phones will be NFC-enabled but may not have the capability turned on. For Samsung Android phones, check under settings > connections > tap NFC and contactless payments > tap the switch to turn NFC on. For Google phones, type "NFC" in the search settings bar and tap to turn it on. Your device must be updated to version 10 or up. Older smartphone models will need to download an NFC reader app to scan the NFC chip.

Yes, but you will need to download an NFC reader app to scan the NFC chip.

iPhone NFC readers are found on the back of the device close to the top of the phone near the camera module. The exact location can vary slightly between models. Iphone 7 and 7 Plus have an NFC chip reader that is located on the top edge of the device, near the rear-facing camera. Many Android devices have NFC readers on the back of the device but closer to the middle of the phone. NFC readers are not located in the camera of the phone (which is used to scan QR codes).

Hold your phone over the connected cloud emblem ensuring your phone's NFC reader is directly over the NFC chip; it may sometimes take at least 15 seconds to pick up the NFC signal. (Be patient; sometimes your phone's NFC Tag Reader may be "sleeping" to conserve the phone's battery and require a longer time to "wake up" and read the chip.) Make sure to hold your phone steady over the emblem while your smartphone is locating the NFC chip. See the question "If my phone is not reading the chip, what can I do?" for more tips.

Yes, if your smartphone is too close to or touching the NFC reader, it will pick up the signal and your smartphone will ping. To avoid this from happening, move your smartphone away from the NFC chip.

Check your phone model and operating system to make sure it has an enabled NFC chip reader. For certain smartphone models, you may need to turn the NFC read on. (See question: What type of smartphone do I need to read an NFC chip?) Also, try the following tips: Metal can interfere with reading the chip so if your product is on or near a metal surface move the product away from the metal. Try removing your phone case while scanning the NFC chip as phone cases can sometimes make it harder for your phone to detect and read the NFC chip. Be patient as your phone's NFC Tag Reader may be "sleeping" to conserve the phone's battery and requires a longer time to "wake up" and read the chip. Lastly, make sure you are holding the part of your phone that contains the reader (not the camera) against the chip. (See question: Where is the NFC reader on my smartphone?) Lastly, all bags, small leather goods and ready-to-wear also have a QR code that is sewn into the inside of the product. This QR code is linked to the same digital passport that is accessed via the NFC chip. Scan the QR code with your camera.

Nothing. The NFC chip will continue working so don't be afraid to take your product out in the rain or wash your T-shirts and hoodies. If you wash your clothes, you should follow instructions on the tag for drying such as line dry or tumble dry low.

No. We do not store any personal data on the NFC chip.

In instances where your Coachtopia product is restored or Upcrafted, the NFC chip will remain in the product. If the product is deconstructed or remade into new Coachtopia product(s), the NFC chip will be removed and may be used in the remade product.
